What are Synapsids? A subtype of mammals with a single temporal fenestra – or temple hole – low on skull.
What are Anapsids? A subtype of mammals with a single temporal fenestra – or temple hole – but high on skull.
What are Diapsids? A subtype of mammals with two temporal fenestra – or temple holes.
What are Monotremes A subtype of mammals that lay eggs, nurse their young, generally have very specialized. (Ex: platypus and echidna)
What are Multituberculates? A subtype of now extinct rodent-like mammals that were out competed by modern rodents.
What is Metatheria (Marsupials)? A subtype of mammals that give birth to live, immature young. More numbers in past. Have pouches (Ex: kangaroos).
What is Eutheria (Placental mammals)? A subtype of mammals that give birth to live, sometimes very mature young. Young grow inside placentas.
What advantages did placentas provide? Young would have fighting chance. Parents could concentrate more on surviving.
