| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| mineral | buidling blocks of rocks |
| physical properties | caused by the internal arrangement of atoms in a mineral |
| color | not a good physical property to identiy minerals except fr sulfur |
| luster | how a mineral reflects light. either metallic or nonmetallic |
| hardness | arranged on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Ranked from 1 (soft)to 10 (hard) |
| streak | used to determine a minerals hardness. Uses glass or unglazed porcelian and you rub the mineral against it |
| metamorphic rock | rocks that have partially melted due to heat and pressure. |
| foliated | minerals in a rock in wavy bands due to partical melting |
| sedimentary rock | rock that forms from pieces of other rocks. Compaction, cementation glue the rocks fragments together |
| clastic | visible sediemnts or fragments in sedimentary rock |
| igneous rock | rocks formed from the cooling and solidification of melted earth materials ( magma or lava) |
| intrusive igneous rocks | The igneous rocks with large crysatsls, course texture due to slow cooling (solidification) inside the Earth Granite is an example |
| extrusive igneous rocks | The igneous rocks with small crysatsls, fine texture due to fast cooling (solidification) outside on the Earth Obsidian is an example |
| Coastal Plain | Province of Virginia with young unconsolidated sediments (sand) and lot sof wetlands such as swamps and marshes. Often called tidewater |
| Piedmont | The Province of Virginia around Richmond. gravel and stone is mined here for construction |
| Appalachian Plateau | high flat beds of sedimentary rocks. Southwester Virginia. Coal is mined here |
| Blue Ridge | Oldest rocks in the state. Mostly folded mountains from the convergence of North American and African during the formation of pangaea |
| Valley and Ridge | Province of virginia with beds of limestone that is chemically weathered. Caves, caverns and sinkhole are found here. the Shanandoah Valley |
| Carbonic acid | carbon Dioxide and water combine to form this acid that causes chemical weathering |
| cyanobacteria | Using photosynthesis changed atmospheric carbon dioxide into ocygen. |
| convection | method of heat transfer where hot less dense material rises and cold more dense materials sinks. Most importan methos of heat transfer on the Earth |
| nonrenewable | resource that is used faster than it can be replaced. Coal oil and natural gas are consided to be this. |
| solar eclipse | eclipse where the moon blocks out part of the sun. Occurs at new moon. The Sun;s coron becomes visible |
| light year | distance light travels in one year. it is a measure of distnace and NOT time |
| carbon dioxide | greenhouse gas that helps trap relfect long wave energy (heat) in the atmosphere |
| weathering | breaking down of rocks into sediments |
| erosion | moving sediments from one place to another by wind, water, gravity or ice |
| saturation | holding as much water as possible. ground water pores complete filled with water. The atmosphere relative humidity is 100% |
| zone of aeration | ground pore are filled with air |
| zone of saturation | ground pores completely filled with water. |
| porosity | the amount of pore space in an object |
| permeability | ability to pass a liquid thru. the pore spaces must be connected |
| humus | the organic component of soil |
| latitude | mesures north and south of the equator. ranges from o to 90 degrees North of South |
| longitude | measures east and west of the Prime Meridian. ranges from 0 to 180 degrees east or west |
| convergent | coming together |
| divergent | moving apart. |
