| volume | The amount of space an object takes up is called _______ |
| water displacement | Process to determine the volume of an irregular object using a graduated cylinder |
| hypothesis | prediction about the answer to problem that can be tested. An educated guess at the answr to a problem |
| Polaris | North Star. The Altitude of this star equals your latitude |
| Steep | When contour lines are close together you have Gentle/Steep slope |
| Nitrogen | The most abundant gas in Earth's atmosphere |
| Ozone | Gas in the stratosphere that protects us from ultraviolet (UV) solar radiation |
| Coriolis Effect | Due to the rotating Earth, Causes moving objects toward/away from the equator or poles to curve. |
| warm front | Weather symbol with half moons; slow moving front and produces light precipitation |
| cold front | Weather symbol with triangles; fast moving front producing heavy precipitation, thunderstorms and possible tornadoes |
| wind | Air moving from high pressure to low pressure. Air moing horizontal; parallel to ground |
| jet stream | High level, fast moving, winds that push weather systems from West to east in the Northern Hemisphere. |
| pyroclastic flow | High temperature cloud of gas, dust and ash released from a volcano |
| greenhouse effect | The trapping of long wave (infrared) energy in the atmopshere. water and carbon dioxide are the main gases |
| fossil fuel | The type of fuel made from once living things. Oil Gas and Coal are example of this type of fuel. |
| amber | Hardened tree sap that often traps and preserves insects |
| sulfur | Distinctly yellow mineral with a rotten egg smell as a special property |
| climate | The average weather of an area. Usually refers to average temperatures and average precipitation |
| rising air | air moving in this direction Rising/Sinking causes precipitation |
| sinking air | air moving in this direction [Rising/Sinking] causes evaporation or dry (desert) conditions |
| deserts | These [Deserts/Rain forests] usually occur where air is Sinking. |
| Milky Way | The name of our galaxy |
| Spiral Galaxy | The most common type of galaxy is the (elliptical/irregular/Spiral]. |
| condensation nucleii | The dust, dirt smoke or ice that water from saturated air condenses on to form a cloud |
| cirrus | High white feathery clouds ususally indicating fair or nice weather |
| cumulus | cotton ball clouds, signals rising air whick leads to precipitation |
| stratus | Thin low level clouds covering the entire sky producing light precipitation |
| nimbus- | prefix on clouds meaning "rain" |
| upwellings | brings cold nutrient rich bottom water to the surface |
| estuary | Area where fresh and salt water mix. The Cheseapeake Bay is an example |
| 4.6 Billion years | The accepted age of the Earth according to science |
| superposition | Principle that says that unless overturned, the oldest rocks are on the bottom |
| crosscutting relations | The relationship that says a rock is younger than the rock it cuts across. |
| terrestrial planet | small rocky surfaced planets close to the Sun with an atmopshere and having very few to no moons. |
| mass | Amount of "stuff" that makes up an object. This does not change with gravity. |
