pharnyx the tube or cavity, with its surrounding membrane and muscles, that connects the mouth and nasal passages with the esophagus
epiglottis a thin, valvelike, cartilaginous structure that covers the glottis during swallowing, preventing the entrance of food and drink into the larynx
esophagus a muscular passage connecting the mouth or pharynx with the stomach in invertebrate and vertebrate animals
peristalsis the progressive wave of contraction and relaxation of a tubular muscular system
sphincter circular band of muscles that circles hollow organs
stomach a saclike enlargement of the alimentary canal, as in humans and certain animals, forming an organ for storing, diluting, and digesting food
chyme he semifluid mass into which food is converted by gastric secretion and which passes from the stomach into the small intestine
duodenum first portion of the small intestines
small intestine part of the digestive system
pancreas a gland near the stomach that provides a liquid for the moving of food through the small intestine
liver a large, reddish-brown, glandular organ located in the upper right side of the abdominal cavity, divided by fissures
gall bladder a pear-shaped, muscular sac attached to the undersurface of the right lobe of the liver, in which bile is stored and concentrated
large intestine extracts moisture from food residues, which are later excreted as faeces
colon he part of the large intestine extending from the cecum to the rectum
