BSC 2010C Chapter 1

Chapter 1

QuestionAnswer
Living Organisms: *exhibit order *reproduce *ability to grow/develop *utilize energy (metabolism) *response to stimuli external environment *ability to adapt *maintains homeostasis (the norm) the body temp *maintains living organisms in an acceptable range
Cell Theory: "The Cell" * structural and fundamental unit of life * Robert Hooke (english scientist) [1665] - first described and named cells * 2 types: Prokaryotes & Eukaryotes
Cell basic structure of living organisms, capable of carrying out all of the activities fundamental to life, Robert Hooke (first toe describe and name cells), 2 types of cells
Prokaryotes: bacteria * simply, no true nucleus * bacteria * lack many organelles * smaller * have cell walls * no nucleus membrane
Eukaryotes: * plants, animals, fungi, Protista * membrane bound nucleus well defined * complex organelles * cell wall only in plants
Both have ribosomes (protein makers)
Level of cell organization Cells -> tissue -> organs systems -> individuals (organisms) -> population -> communities -> ecosystems biosphere
Taxonomy Classification of organisms. From most general to specific
KPCOFGS Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genes Species
5 Kingdoms Monera = Bacteria Protista = single celled eukaryotes Plantae = plants Fungi = mushrooms, slime molds, fungi Animalia = animals
Scientific Method is used to: * Review scientific data * formulate hypothesis * Experiment and observe to collect data * Evaluate results
Steps of Scientific Method: Observation Question Hypothesis Prediction Experiment
Test supports hypothesis: male additional predictions and test them.
Test doesn't support hypothesis: revise hypothesis or create new one.
Hypothesis Facts * they reflect past experience with similar questions * make multiple hypotheses whenever possible * hypothesis should be testable via scientific process * can be eliminated, but not proven with 100% certainty
Ho (Hypothesis Null) no change (Null)
Ha (Hypothesis Alternative) change (alternative)
Feed back * is used to regulate function in many biological systems * prevents waste of energy and biochemical * helps maintain homeostasis
the 2 types of cells Prokaryotes, Eukaryotes
Living organisms... viruses don't grow/reproduce without loss

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
