Unit 14-Plants

Vocabulary for Plant Unit

QuestionAnswer
Photosynthesis process where plants convert light energy to chemical bond energy in the form of organic compounds.
Pigment a colored molecule that absorbs light energy
Chlorophyll the main pigment plants use in photosynthesis
Chloroplast the photosynthetic organelle found in plant cells
light reaction the first part of photosynthesis in which plants breakdown water to produce ATP and NADPH
ATP a molecule used by plants and animals to store energy
Photolysis done during the light reactions, this is a reaction where water is split to produce energy
PGAL a three carbon molecule produced during the dark reactions of photosynthesis
NADPH a high energy storage molecule found only in plants
dark reaction (Calvin Cycle) second part of photosynthesis in which organic compounds are produced
guard cell surround stomates in a leaf, they regulate opening and closing of the stomates
stomates openings in the leaf where gas exchange takes place
xylem conducting tissue in plants that moves water and minerals up a stem
lenticels stomates without guard cells found in the stem of a plant
phloem conducting tissue in a plant that moves nutrients down the stem
transpiration process of gas exchange that takes place through stomates in a leaf
auxin type of hormone that allow plants to respond to their environment
tropism the way a plant responds to certain changes in its environment

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
