Question | Answer |
---|---|
Describe the cardiac cycle | Simulus (SA node)--Depolarization--Contraction--Repolarization |
What is a good heart rhythm called? And how do you find it? | Normal Sinus Rhythm, can only be said when you see it on an EKG |
What is the function of the Atrial Ventricular Node? | It pauses the electricity from the SA node to allow the blood into the ventricles, once the blood is there it releases the electricity to the bundle of HIS and Perjinke to cause contraction |
Describe what can happen to the heart if the "timing is off" | Causes problems with the "Head-Lungs-Heart-Kidneys-Legs" Altered mental status, breathing probs, low urine out, peripheral probs, arrhythmias |
Describe an "ectopic beat" | electricity (stimulus) not coming from the SA node |
Describe events for a person needing a pacemaker | "Complete Heart Block" and "Symptomatic Bradycardia" |
What is the 'P'wave? | Depolarization of the atrium (R & L)with a pause for atrial contraction |
What is the QRS complex describing? What are the normal values? | Depolarization of the ventricles. QRS < or = to 0.12 seconds |
What is the 'T'wave describing? | Repolarization of the ventricles |
Describe the 'Q', 'R' and 'S' of the QRS complex | Q= 1st negative deflection R= 1st positive deflection S= 1st negative deflection after the R wave |
What is the 'PR' interval important? What are the normal values? | Because it shows the time it takes to depolarize the atrium. PR < or = to .2 seconds |
What is it called if the PR> 0.2 seconds? | 1st degree heart block (not a big deal) |
What type of elevation preceeds a myocardial infarction on the EKG? | An 'ST' segment elevation. |
Give the normal bpm of the SA node. AV node? Ventricles? | SA=60-100 bpm AV= 40-60 bpm Ventricles= 20-40 bpm |
What are the drugs of choice for SYMPTOMATIC BRADYCARDIA? | Atropine first then Epinephrine |
Why is Amiodarone given? | Indicated for life-threatening VF and VT. Unlabeled uses include converting atrial fibrillation to normal sinus rhythm and PSVT. |
Dig toxicity symptoms | Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, blurred or yellow vision, and cardiac dysrhythmias are all signs of digitalis toxicity |
The use of Dopamine for Heart Failure? | Dopamine is a β-adrenergic agonist whose inotropic action is reserved for treatment of severe heart failure accompanied by hemodynamic instability. Such a state may be indicated by tachycardia accompanied by hypotension. |
