Organelles

organelles and functions

Nuclear membrane separates nucleus from cytoplasm. Is porous- things can go thru it
Nucleolus manufactures ribosomes
Chromatin heredity material, condenses into chromosomes during cell division
Plasma membrane separates and protects cell from environment
Carbohydrates act as ID tags to recognize other cells
Cell wall found in plants, algae, and bacteria to support and protect cell. Cell wall is porous and allows water and gasses to pass through
Cellulose tough and flexible, gives rigidity and strength
Endoplasmic reticulum ○ flat sacs of membranes that extend into cytoplasm of the cell Lipids and lipoproteins are produced here May be rough(with ribosomes) or smooth( no ribosomes)
Golgi apparatus ○ A stack of membrane- bound vesicles that are important in packaging macromolecules for transport throughout the cell.
Mitochondria cell's power source Rod shaped usually but sometimes round ○ Outer membrane limits organelle Inside membrane shelves everything within
Vacuoles membrane-bound storage place within the cytoplasm They store waste and biproducts
Ribosome Site for proteins that generate genetic material
Lysosomes gets rid of waste products
Chloroplast Photosynthesis takes place here
Centrioles paired organelles near the nucleus
Cytoskeleton Aids in movement of material in and out of the cell supports cell and provides its shape
Cilia ○ whiplike appendeges that extend from the surface of the eukaryotic cells aids in reproduction Aids in moving liquid in the cell
flagella ○ whiplike appendeges that extend from the surface of the eukaryotic cells aids in reproduction Aids in moving liquid in the cell
cell structure nucleus, plasma membrane(cell membrane),cytoplasm
nucleus a distinct central organelle that contains the cell's genetic material in the form of DNA
Cell the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
