Lamp Condenser immediately above lamp, focuses the light into a column
Substage Condenser just below the stage focuses and directs the light in to the sample on the stage
Course/fine focus knob used to bring sample into focus. Course focus knob raises and lowers stage rapidly, use with caution.
Total Magnification total magnification = objective x ocular
Limit of Resolution smallest distance between two objects that will still allow them to be viewed as two separate objects
Which lens do you need immersion oil for? 100x objective. Oil is to match the refractive index of glass to decrease degree of refraction and the conmitant loss of light.
Centering the object use coaxial knobs to bring the object to the middle of the viewing field
Ocular micrometer a ruler that is incorporated into one of the ocular lenses
Stage micrometer a glass slide with a metric ruler etched in it
What happens when you increase the diaphragm? Amount of light increases, clarity increases, contrast decreases.
