| Term | Definition |

| Lamp Condenser | immediately above lamp, focuses the light into a column |
| Substage Condenser | just below the stage focuses and directs the light in to the sample on the stage |
| Course/fine focus knob | used to bring sample into focus. Course focus knob raises and lowers stage rapidly, use with caution. |
| Total Magnification | total magnification = objective x ocular |
| Limit of Resolution | smallest distance between two objects that will still allow them to be viewed as two separate objects |
| Which lens do you need immersion oil for? | 100x objective. Oil is to match the refractive index of glass to decrease degree of refraction and the conmitant loss of light. |
| Centering the object | use coaxial knobs to bring the object to the middle of the viewing field |
| Ocular micrometer | a ruler that is incorporated into one of the ocular lenses |
| Stage micrometer | a glass slide with a metric ruler etched in it |
| What happens when you increase the diaphragm? | Amount of light increases, clarity increases, contrast decreases. |
