Stars, Galaxies and the Universe

First Stage of star ball of gas and dust that is pulled together by gravity into a sphere.
nuclear fusion Hydrogen changes to helium as sphere of gases and dust gets denser and hotter.
Star classifications Main sequence stars,giants,supergiants,and white dwarf stars.
Second stage of a star Main Sequence Star (longest stage)
Third stage of a star Red giant or super giant
Red giant star that expands and cools once it has used all of its hydrogen.core shrinks and large atmosphere is produced that cools
supergiant core of red giant keeps shrinking and goes super are 100 times bigger than the sun
white dwarf a small hot star that is the left over center of an old star- Final stage of a star's life.
Hertzsprung Danish astronomer who compared brighness and temperature of stars on a graph
Russell Americanastronomer who compared brighness and temperature of stars on a graph similar to Hertzsprung
H-R diagram a graph that shows the relationship between a star's surface temp and absolute magnitude.blue hottest- red coolest
magnitude of a star its brightness
main sequence the location on the H-R diagram where most stars lie.
supernova a gigantic explosion in which a massive star collapes and throws its outer layers into space.
neutron star a star that has collapsed under gravity to the point that the electrons and protons have smashed together to form neutrons
pulsar a rapidly spinning netron star
black hole an object so massive and dense that light cannot escape it's gravity.
