Evoultion Test

Evolution

QuestionAnswer
Evolution Change in a kind of organism over time; process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms.
Variation Differences among a population, the raw material for natural selection.
Adaptations Over many generations, memebers of a population inherit beneficial variations in a larger frequency; a build-up of many small modifications.
Structural Structural or anatomical. Examples: beak shape, tooth shape, anglerfish's lure, muscular wall of heart.
Physiological Biochemical basis. Examples: spider's web, poisons, toxins.
Behavioral Actions to respond to environment. Examples: migration, group hunting, leaning toward light.
Species A group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring in nature.
Gene Pool Collection of all the genes for all of the traits in a population.
Speciation Evolution into separate species.
Geographic Isolation Population of organisms separated by a barrier such as a river, canyon or mountains.
Reproductive Isolation Interbreeding or fertilization is blocked. (different mating habits, chromosome #'s)
Genetic Drift Rapid changes in the # and kinds of genes in a small isolated population.
Adaptive Radiation Variation within population allows small groups to branch out into new habitats & be successful
Divergent Evolution One species evolves into 2 or more with different characteristics.
Convergent Evolution Species that are not closely related evolve similar trait, behaviors, or characteristics. Example: Fish &dolphins.
Evolving Together Interactions of different species lead to mutal adaptations. Examples: Plants and pollinators.
Gradualism Slow & steady change over great lengths of time.
Punctuated Equilibrium Sudden changes in environment cause rapid evolution, followed by long periods without change.
Human Evolution Humans classified as animals... Mammals... Primates.
(Primates) Common Charactristics Problem solving, large brain, flexible hands, rotating shoulders, 5 digits, and opposable thumb.
Evidence of Primates Fossil record and comparative anatomy.
Human Evolution Sequence 8 million years ago human divergence: Australopithecus, Homo habilis (handy), Homo erectus (upright), Homo sapiens (neanderthal & cro-magnons).
