Test #3 Study Guide

Rock Cycle, Earth Layers, and Plate Tectonics

QuestionAnswer
Compare and contrast Alfred Wegener's Continental Drift Theory to the modern day Plate Tectonis Theory. Wegener thought that the continents themselves plowed through the ocean florr from Pangaea to their current positions while the Plate Tectonics theory says plates with continents and oceans on them have moved on the upper part of the mantle.
Describe which type of crust will subduct under another and why. Oceanic crust will subduct under continental crust because it is denser than continental. Oceanic denser than continental
Relate convection currents to plate tectonis. Magma rises by convection currents and pushes up through the plate tectonics to find an opening.
Describe Earth layers by thickness and density. (continental vs. oceanic crust) Crust- thin, not very dense, bother plates Mantle-Very dense, oceanic, very thick Outer Core- moderatley thick and dense, no plates Inner Core- moderatley thick and dense, no plates
Identify and describe Earth layers including which layers make up the plates, which layer has plasticity, which layers make up the mantle, and the core's states of matter (from a diagram) Lithosphere-makes up plate Asthenosphere-plasticity, liquid and solid Mesosphere-plasticity, lqiuid and solid Outer Core-liquid Inner Core-solid
Describe the process of seafloor spreading and the result. Hot, less dense material below Earth's crust rises toward the surface at the mid-ocean ridges creating new seafloor.
Describe processes that create each type of rock in the rock cycle. Sedimentary- sediments are compacted and cemented together Metamorphic- high temperature/pressure/hardening Igneous- magma cools and hardens

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
