| Work | When a force causes an object to move in the direction of the applied force. |
| Machine | any device that changes the amount of force applied to an object, the direction, or both. |
| Lever | a simple machine having an arm that moves around a fixed point. |
| Fulcrum | the fixed point; pivot point |
| Effort Arm | the part of the lever on wich a person or another machine applies a force. |
| Resistance Arm | the part of a lever that applies a force on an object. |
| Pulley | a wheel that has a groove along its edge. |
| Wheel and Axle | a simple machine in wich in wich either a wheel turns and axle or an axle turns a wheel around a central pivot point. |
| Inclined Plane | any flat, sloping surface. |
| Wedge | a simple machine made up of 1 or 2 inclined planes. |
| Screw | an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder or cone. |
| Compound Machine | a device that is made up of 2 or more simple machines |
| Effieciency | the ratio of the work that comes out of a machine to the work put into that machine. |
