Biology Chapter 19

Stack #58926

WordDefinition
eukoryotic membrane bound organelles
pseudopods "false feet" temporary extensions of cytoplasm
How do Amoeba's move? By using pseudopods.
phagocytosis an organism surrounds its pray with it's membrane which forms a food vacuole.
What does the contractile vacuole do? controls the water balance of the cell
ciliates one celled organisms that use cilia to swim and capture food
cilia short, hairlike structures extending from the cell
the paramecium is shaped like a slipper
pellicle flexible protein under the cell membrane
trichocysts capsules under the pellicle that release structures with barbs at the end for defense, and to anchor the organism
How do the rows of cilia occur in a paramecium? parallel rows, coordinated
oral groove opening in a paramecium where food is ingested
gullet extention of the oral groove that forms food vacuoles
anal pore structure through which undigested material is expelled from the cell
flagellates animallike protists, move by flagella
What is the main way to classify algae? the type of photosynthetic pigments they contain
Describe Golden Algae photosynthtic, golden color from pigments other than chloraphyll. Found in ocean and fresh water. Most are Diatoms.
diatoms autotrophic, unicelular protists that have a cell wall with 2 overlapping halves, the cell wall contains pectin, usually reproduce asexually.
What is the most common member of Fire Algae? dinoflagellates
What can dinoflagellates do? produce light
Unique characteristics of the Euglena - chlorplasts can disappear - eyespot -no cell wall
One example of Colonial Green Alge Volvox
3 Multicellular algae: Red, Brown, Green
Red Algae have holdfasts
Brown Algae are also called kelps
Brown algae contain air bladders and holdfasts
what do air bladders do? keep them afloat
what do holdfasts do? anchor to rocks
what is an example of green algae? Spirogyra
