Nathan Hale Biology Parts of the Microscope

Microscope Termdescription
cover slip a small piece of glass used to cover the water drop on a slide
slide small glass plate used to hold the specimen
power the amount of magnification for a lens
arm part of the scope used to support it when it is being carried
coarse adjustment knob moves the stage up and down to help get the specimen into view, the larger of the two focus knobs
fine adjustment knob moves the stage slightly to help you sharpen your focus, the smaller of the two focus knobs
diaphragm adjusts the amount of light that reaches the specimen
base bottom of the microscope that sits on the table, also used to support it when being carried
eyepiece contains the ocular lens, the part you look through
nosepiece the part of the microscope that holds the lenses, can be rotated
objective lenses the lenses on the nosepiece, range from high to low power
stage clips used to hold a slide in place on the stage
light source either a mirror or an electric bulb
compound light microscope a microscope that uses light and lenses to magnify an image
