Drug Forms/ActionDefinitions
Aersol A solution dispensed as a mist, any suspension of particles in air or gas
Ampule A small, glass-sealed flask, often containing medication
Caplet A tablet in the shape of a capsule, making it easier to swallow
Capsule A small gelatinous case for holding a dose of medicine
Cream A emulsified medicinal or cosmetic preparation, a semi-solid emulsion of either the oil-in-water or the water-in oil type ordinarily intended for topical use
Elixir A sweetened, aromatic hydro alcoholic liquid used in the compounding of oral medicines
Emulsion A mixture of two liquids not mutually soluble
Enteric Coated (EC) Tablets/capsules that are covered with a substance that prevent their digestion in the stomach , it only dissolves in the small intestine
Extract A solid or semisolid preparation, the active principle of a drug obtained by distillation or chemical process
Foam A mixture of finely divided gas bubbles interspersed in a liquid
Gel A semisolid condition of a precipitated or coagulated colloid, jelly, it contains a large amount of water
Measured Dose Inhaler (MDI) A device used for self-administration of aerosolized drugs. A device for administering medicines by inhalation
Liniment A liquid vehicle containing a medication to be rubbed on or applied to the skin, may be by friction method or on a bandage
Lozenge A small, dry, medicinal solid to be held in the mouth until it dissolves
Ointment A viscous, semisolid vehicle used to apply medicines to the skin. The base or vehicle typically include petrolatum, fat, oils, resins or water based or water-soluble compound
Paste A soft, smooth, thick mixture (semisolid gelatinous)substance usually intended for external application
Powder As aggregation of fine particles of one or more substances that may be passed through fine meshes
Pill Medicine in the form of a tiny solid mass or pellet to be swallowed or chewed , may be coated
Solution A liquid containing a dissolved substance
Spansule A brand of controlled-release capsule
Lotion A liquid medicinal preparation for local application to, or bathing of, a part
Suppository A semi-solid substance for introduction into the rectum, vagina or urethra, where it dissolves (easily melted)
Rectum Suppository Medication administered as suppositories or enemas can be given for local & systemic absorption, inserted rectum
Vaginal Suppository Medication administered as suppositories can be given for local effect generally inserted with an applicator into the vagina
Suspension The state of a solid when its particles are mixed with, but not dissolved in, a fluid or another solid
Syrup A concentrated solution of sugar in water to which specific medicinal substances are usually added, used principally to give a pleasant odor and taste to solutions
Tablet A small, disk like mass of medicinal powder; a compressed, spherical form of medications
Tincture An alcoholic extract of vegetable or animal substances, a solution of medicinal substance in alcohol
Transdermal patch Medication that is stored in a patch placed on the skin and absorbed through the skin
Troche A solid, discoid cylindrical mass consisting chiefly of medicinal powder, sugar and mucilage
Vial A small glass bottle for medicine or chemical, contains multiple dose or single dose use
Addiction A compulsive and maladaptive dependence on a substance
Additive The effect that one drug or substance contributes to the action of another drug or substance
Adverse effect An undesired side effect or toxicity caused by the treatment
Allergy An immune response to a foreign antigen that results in inflammation and organ dysfunction
Anaphylactic Serious state of shock resulting from hypersensitivity to an allergen
Antagonist A medication that blocks or reverse the action of another medication
Cumulative effect A drug effect that is apparent only after several doses have been given. It is caused by excretion or metabolic degradation of only a fraction of each dose
Idiosyncrasy An unusual response to a drug, it can manifest as an accelerated, toxic or inappropriate response to the usual therapeutic dose of a drug
Potentiation The synergistic action of two substances, such as hormones or drugs, in which the total effects are greater than the sum of the independent effects of the two substances
Psychologic Effecting the mental state, mind, the mind in all of its relationships, normal and abnormal
Side effect an action or effect of a drug other than that desired
Synergistic Acting together, an action of two or more agents working with each other , cooperating
Teratogenic effect Causing abnormal development of the embryo
Therapeutic A healing agent, having medicinal or healing properties
Tolerance Capacity of enduring a large amount of a substance with out an adverse effect and showing a decreased sensitivity to subsequent doses of the same substance
Toxic Resemble or caused by poison
Half-life The time it takes medication to metabolize in the body and be excreted
