19 - PopEcology
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Population Ecology | The study of the # of a particular organism that is found in an area and why that number changes or stays fixed over time. It deals with not only the total # of organisms, but also with their distribution and how they interact with each other. |
| Population | A group of organisms of a single species living in a particular area at a given time. Example: 10/acre; 10/mile |
| Population Density | The # of individuals per unit area at a given time. This density is a function of the type of habitat (resource-rich) and time (year, month, etc). During good years or months the population may increase and during lean times it may decrease. |
| Range | The geographic limit of its distribution. For example, the range of a particular species may be the southern Appalachian mountains or the Flint Hills. Within this range individuals may be dispersed in one of several ways |
| Random Distribution (Range) | When individuals are spaced unpredictably (randomly). Rare Example: four beetles in flour; maggots on/in meat Usually live in/on food. |
