What causes mountains, earthquake, and volcanoes? plate tectonics
What is happening to rocks during a rock cycle? Rocks are changing
How can rocks show that changes take a place on Earth? When mountains form, or volcanoes, or earthquakes happen, rocks change position. Scientists study layers of rocks to learn about the earth and how it has changed.
How do scientists think Earth's crust moves? Scientists have learned that the surface of the earth is broken into about 20 plates. The plates float on top of the cooled mantle. The plates are carried by the floating mantle.
The layer that surrounds the earth and protects it from too much sunlight. atmosphere
Earth's lakes, ocean, and rivers. hydrosphere
Rocks, soils, and minerals. lithosphere
The outer part of the lithosphere. crust
The center part of the earth. core
Layer between the crust and the core. mantle
The theory that says that the earth's surface is made up of about 20 moving plates. plate tectonics
Process that breaks down and changes rocks. weathering
Process of moving weathered rock and soil by wind, water, and ice. erosion
The dropping of materials moved by erosion. deposition
Rock formed from molten rock that comes from deep within the earth. igneous rock
Rock formed when sediments are pressed or cemented together. sedimentary rock
Rock formed when igneous or sedimentary rock is changed by heat or pressure. metamorphic rock
Remains of any dead organism trapped in layers of rocks. fossil
