QuestionAnswer
Other Evidence of Evolution Scientists compare body structures, developement before birth, and DNA sequences to determine the ecolutionary relationships among organisms.
*Similarities in Body Structure* organism’s body structure is its basic body plan (how its bones are arranged) ex: animals with backbones (vertabraes)
Animals with Similar Body Structure fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals (have internal skeleton with a backbone)
Common Ancestor Dolphins, birds and dolphins evolved from common ancestor
HOMOLOGUS STRUCTURES Body parts that are structurally similar in related species; provide evidence that the structures were inherited from a common ancestor.
Animals with Similar Body Structure fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals (have internal skeleton with a backbone)
Common Ancestor-Body Structure Dolphins, birds and dolphins evolved from common ancestor
HOMOLOGUS STRUCTURES Body parts that are structurally similar in related species; provide evidence that the structures were inherited from a common ancestor.
*Similarities in Early Development* Scientists can also make inferences about evoluntionary relationships by comparing early development of different organisms
Common Ancestor-Early Development Rat, turtle, and chicken- all have tail & tiny gill slits in throats
Turtles Are More Closely Related to a chicken than they are a rat
*Similarties in DNA* Scientists infer that the species inherited many of the same genes from a common ancestor
Comparing Genes Recently, scientists compared genes of different species to determine species
Closely Related The more closely realted the DNA sequences are, the more closely they are related
Comparing nitrogen bases scientist can find out how closely related species are by comparing nitrogen based sequences in the DNA
DNA bases DNA bases on a gens specify what kind of protein is produced
comparing amino acids scientist can also compare order of amino acids in protein to see how close realtated species are
elephant shrew that the elephant shrews DNA was more closey related to elephants than rodents

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
