CH6 Minerals & Rocks
Science Chapter 6 4th grade
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| rocks and minerals, what are minerals-mineral crystals | minerals are natural, nonliving solid crystals that make up rocks. |
| properties of minerals | the properties of minerals are, color, luster, hardness, streak, and its shape. |
| color | the same mineral can be different colors. the may look different and are different colors but some of them are the same minerals. |
| luster | luster is what makes the mineral reflect the light. there is glassy lusters or metallic lusters or soft lusters. |
| hardness | hard minerals can scratch any idom. |
| streak | streak is the color of the powder that a mineral leaves when it is scratched across a special plate. |
| crystal shape | crystals have a definite shape. |
| cleavage | minerals that break along smooth, flat surfaces have cleavage. |
| other properties of minerals | a magnetic rock can realy be magnit. |
| lesson 2 | ore is a rock rich in valuable minerals that can be removed from from earths crust. |
| hematite | the iron from hematite may be used in many products made of steel. |
| galena | galena has a metallic luster. lead is found in galena.it is also gray.it is easy to find. |
| lead | lead inside aprons protects people while x-ray pictures are taken. lead is easy to shape. |
| copper | copper pipes are often used to carry water. copper was one of the first metals used by people thousands of years ago. |
| Lesson 3 | how are rocks classified |
| igneous rocks | igneous rocks form from this molten rock. rock below earths surface can be so hot it melted! |
| Magma cooling quickly | basalt is a quickly cooled igneous rock. most of earths crust beneath the oceans is basalt. |
| matma cooling slowly | the magma then slowly cools. |
| sedimentary rocks | sedimentary rocks form when laters of sediments settle on top of one another and harden. |
| types and uses of sedimentary rock | limestone can form from tiny bits of skeletons and shells. |
| layering | the layers of sedimentary rock are easy to see in the sandstone cliffs. |
| metamorphic rock | the metamorghic rocks marble, schist, and gneiss in the sierra nevada mountains of california were once limestone and sandstone. |
| lesson 4 how do rocks change the rock cycle | the recycling of old rock into new is an ongoing process called the rock cycle. |
