rocks and minerals,what are minerals-mineral crystals minerals are natural, nonliving solid crystals that make up rocks.
properties of minerals the properties of minerals are,color,luster,hardness,streak,and its shape.
color the same mineral can be different colors. the may look different and are different colors but some of them are the same minerals.
luster luster is what makes the mineral reflect the light. there is glassy lusters or metallic lusters or soft lusters.
hardness hard minerals can scratch any idom.
streak streak is the color of the powder that a mineral leaves when it is scratched across a special plate.
crystal shape crystals have a definite shape.
cleavage minerals that break along smooth, flat surfaces have cleavage.
other properties of minerals a magnetic rock can realy be magnit.
lesson 2 ore is a rock rich in valuable minerals that can be removed from from earths crust.
hematite the iron from hematite may be used in many products made of steel.
galena galena has a metallic luster. lead is found in galena.it is also gray.it is easy to find.
lead lead inside aprons protects people while x-ray pictures are taken. lead is easy to shape.
copper copper pipes are often used to carry water. copper was one of the first metals used by people thousands of years ago.
Lesson 3 how are rocks classified
igneous rocks igneous rocks form from this molten rock. rock below earths surface can be so hot it melted!
Magma cooling quickly basalt is a quickly cooled igneous rock. most of earths crust beneath the oceans is basalt.
matma cooling slowly the magma then slowly cools.
sedimentary rocks sedimentary rocks form when laters of sediments settle on top of one another and harden.
types and uses of sedimentary rock limestone can form from tiny bits of skeletons and shells.
layering the layers of sedimentary rock are easy to see in the sandstone cliffs.
metamorphic rock the metamorghic rocks marble,schist, and gneiss in the sierra nevada mountains of california were once limestone and sandstone.
lesson 4 how do rocks change the rock cycle the recycling of old rock into new is an ongoing process called the rock cycle.
