| anterior | towards the front |
| posterior | towards the back |
| dorsal | towards the back |
| ventral | towards the front |
| flexion, flexing | bending |
| extension, extending | straightening |
| proximal | closest to the center |
| distal | farthest from the center |
| sagittal | vertical plane dividing the body into left & right sides |
| midsagittal | vertical plane dividing the body into equal right & left sides |
| transverse (trans) | horizontal body plane that divides the body into top & bottom halves |
| coronal (frontal) | vertical plane that divides the body into front & back halves |
| lateral | side |
| bilateral | both sides |
| medial (mesial) | middle |
| oblique | at an angle |
| superior (supra) | above |
| inferior (sub or infra) | below |
| cephalic | head (similar to superior) |
| caudal | "tail" or base of spine (similar to inferior) |
| peripheral | outer edges |
| upright | standing |
| decubitus | lying down |
| decubitus ulcers | caused from prolonged lying down |
| recumbent | lying down |
| dorsal recumbent | lying down, face up |
| prone | face down or palm down |
| supine | face up or palm up |
| rotation (version) | turning |
| eversion | turning outward or inside out |
| internal | inside |
| external | outside |
| sinistro | to the left (oculus sinister, left eye) |
| dextro | to the right(oculus dexter, right eye) |
