Types joint movement
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Flexion | bending at joint;parts get closer together ie; bend at knee |
| Extension | Straightening parts at joint so angle between them decreases & parts come closer together EX: straightening the knee |
| Dorsiflexion | Movement at the ankle that brings foot closer to the shin EX: walking on heels |
| Plantar Flexion | Movement at ankle that brings foot farther from the shin EX: walking/standing on toes |
| Hyperextension | Extension of parts at joint beyond anatomical position EX: bending head back beyond the upright position. Also described as abnormal extension beyond norm range of motion from injury |
| Abduction | Moving a part away from the midline |
| Adduction | Moving a part toward the midline |
| Rotation | moving a part around an axis (twisting head side to side) |
| Circumduction | moving a part so that its end follows a circular path (moving finger in circular motion w/out moving hand) |
| Pronation | Turning the hand so that the palm is downward or facing posteriorly |
| Supination | Turning the hand so the palm is upward or facing anteriorly |
| Eversion | turning the foot so the plantar surface faces laterally |
| Iversion | turning the foot so the plantar surface faces medially |
| Retraction | moving a part backward (pulling head backward) |
| Protraction | Moving a part forward (thrusting the head fwd) |
| Elevation | Raising a part (shrugging shoulders) |
| Depression | Lowering a part (drooping the shoulders) |
