Adrenergic Blocking Drugs

What are agonists? drugs with a specific receptor affinity that mimic the body's natural chemicals
What is angina? chest pain
What are antagonist? drugs that bind to specific receptors and inhibit or block the response of the receptors
What are dysrhythmias? irregular heart rhythms
What is intrinsic sympathomimetic activity? The paradoxical action of some beta blocking drugs, that mimics the action of the sympathetic nervous system
What is lipophilicity? the chimical attraction of a substance
What are pheochrmocytoma? a vascular adrenal gland tumor that is usuallly benign but secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine and thus often causes CNS stimulation and substantial blood pressure elevation
What is sympatholytics? drugs that inhibit the postganglionic functioning of the SNS
Vasodilation of blood vessels with the alpha blockers results in? a drop in BP and a reduction in urinary obstruction
Beta blockers inhibit? the stimulation of beta adrenergic receptor by blocking the effects of the SNS
Beta blockers are classified as either? selective or nonselective
What a pt has experienced infiltration of a peripheral infusion of dopamine, the nurse knows that injecting the alpha blocker regitine will result in local? vasodilation
When administering beta blockers the nurse knows that which guideline for administration and monitoring is correct? weaning off the med is necessary to prevent reboud hypertension
The nurse providing teaching for a pt who has a new med for beta 1 blockers will keep in mind that these drugs result in which effect? bradycardia
