Adrenergic Drugs

What is adrenergic agonists? drugs that stimulate and mimic the actions of the sympathetic nervous system
What is adrenergic recptors? receptor sites for the sympathetic neurotransmitters nerepinephrine and epinepherine
What is alpha adrenergic receptors? A class of adrenergic receptors that are further subdivided into alpha 1 and alpha 2 adrenergic receptors and are differentiated by their anatomic location in the tissues, muscles, and organs
What are autonomic functions? Bodily functions that are involuntary and result from the physiologic activity of the ANS.
What is autonomic nervous system? a branch of the PNS that controls autonomic bodily functions, it consists of the SNS and the PNS
What are beta adrenerfic receptors? receptors located on postsynaptic effector cells of tissues, muscles and organs stimulated by specific autonomic nerve fivers
What are catecholamines? substances that can produce a sypathomemetic response. they are either endogenous catecholamines of synthetic catecholamines
What are dopaminergic receptors? a third type of adrenergic receptor located in various tissures and organs and activated by the binding of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which can be either endogenous or a synthetic drug form
What is mydriasis? pupillary dilation, whether natural
What is ophthalmics? drugs that are used in the eye
What is positive chroniotropic effect? an increase in heart rate
What is positive dromotropic effect? an increase in the conduction of cardiac electrical impulses through the AV node, which results in the transfer of nerve action potentials from the atria to the ventricles.
What is positive inotropic effect? an increase in the force of contraction of the heart muslce
What are sympathomemetics? drugs used therapeutically that mimic the catecholamines epinephrine, noepinephrine, and domapine
What is synaptic cleft? the space either between two adjacent nerve cell membranes or between a nerve cell membrace and an effector organ cell membrane
What do catecholamines stimulate? the SNS
The nurse caring for a pt who is receiving beta 1 agonist drug therapy needs to be aware that these drugs cause? Increased cardiac contractility
During a teaching session for a pt who is recieving inhaled salmeterol, the nurse emphasizes that the drug is indicated for? prevention of bronchospasm
For a pt receiving a vasoactive drug such as intravenous dopamine, which action by the nurse is most appropriate? Assess the IV site hourly to rule out infiltration
A pt is receiving dobutamine for shock and is compaining of feeling more skipping beats than yesterday. the nurse's next action should be? Assess the pt's vital signs and cardiac rhythm
When a drug is characterized as having a negative chronotropic effect, the nurse knows to expect? Decreased heart rate
