Vocabulary on heredity
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| DNA | The blueprint for our bodies. Tells us what we will look like. |
| Chromosome | Where genes are located |
| Genes | Short segments of DNA that carry traits - ex. eye color or hair color. |
| Mutation | Change in the DNA sequence that can cause significant errors in our bodies. They can also be passed down to offspring. |
| Allele | Specific type of gene in which they tell you the exact form of a gene - ex. Brown hair, blonde hair, blue eyes, green eyes. |
| Genotype | Combination of alleles - The letters for a alleles - Hh, HH, or hh. |
| Phenotype | The physical look of a person - example: brown hair, blue eyes. |
| Dominant alleles | Mask the the presence of recessive alleles - represented by a capital letter. |
| Recessive alleles | You need two for the trait to show up in the traits of a person because it is not as powerful as the dominant allele. |
| Meiosis | When sex cells are reproduced |
| Law of segregation | During meiosis, the paired alleles separate into two different sex cells leaving just one allele in each. |
| Jumping genes | Genes with no particular purpose jump from one location to another. |
| Genetic engineering | When scientists can change genetic material to give it qualities that are desirable to humans. |
