Sc. 8 Cells & System

plant and animal cells, systems in humans

QuestionAnswer
What are some common characteristics of living organisms? Living organisms: -need energy - respond and adapt to their environments - reproduce - grow - produce waste
Plants use this from the sun to make their own food. energy
Animals get their energy from what? food
What are the smallest things scientists believe to be alive? cells
What is the process used to break down food so that organisms can use materials from the food for energy? digestion
Most living organisms have systems that perform functions to keep the organism alive. What are these systems called? organs
Organs are made from tissues, what are tissues made from? cells
What system does the heart belong to? circulatory system
What system does the stomach belong to? digestion system
What system do lungs belong to? respiratory system
What does multicellular mean? it has many cells
What does unicellular mean? it has a single cell
Jellylike material in which other parts of the cell float. Distributes materials such as oxygen and food to different parts of teh cell. cytoplasm
surronds and protects the contents of the cell. Helps control the movement of substances in and out of the cell. cell membrane
They are thicker and more rigid then cell membranes. Made from cellulose and provide support for the cell. cell wall
are large, dark, round and are often the most easily seen structure in a cell. It controls most of the cell's activities. nucleus
balloonlike spaces within the cytoplasm are storge places for extra food, wastes and other substances that the cell cannot uses right away. vacuole
are the structures in which the process of photosynthesis takes place. They are found only inside cells in green plants. They are not found in animal cells. chloroplast
structures inside the cell organelles
Why are cells so small? To do their work, cells need a constant supply of oxygen, water, and food particles and have to get rid of wastes. Larger cells would need more materials and would produce more wastes.Materials can only get in and out through the cell membrane.
A membrane that lets all materials cross it. permeable
A membrane that lets nothing cross it. impermeable
the movement of particles in liquids and gases from an area of higher concentration to and area of lower concentration. The spreading out process of molecules. diffusion
transports sugars manufactured in the leaves to the rest of the plant phloem
conducts water and minerals absorbed by the root cells to every cell in the plant xylem
loss of water from a plant through evaporation transpiration
the diffusion of a solvent, usually water, through a selectively permable membrane osmosis
system responsible for moving blood through our bodies circulatory
system responsible for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide respiratory
all living things are composed of one or more cells, that the cell is the basic unit of life, and that all cells come from already existing cells cell theory

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
