All the vocabulary for Level 1 of the Respiration & Excretion menu.

| breathing | air moving in and out of the lungs |
| cellular respiration | a process where oxygen (from breathing) is used to break down sugar (glucose) to make energy |
| pharynx | the back of the throat |
| larynx | also called the voicebox, this is where air passes after going through the pharynx |
| epiglottis | a flap at the top of the trachea that prevents food from going down the trachea |
| trachea | also called the windpipe, this is the tube made of c-shaped cartilage that carries air to your lungs |
| bronchi | the two tubes that split off of the trachea and go to each lung |
| lungs | the two sac-like organs in the chest where gas exchange occurs |
| alveoli | tiny sac-like (or balloon-like) structures in the lungs where gas exchange occurs |
| diaphragm | the muscle beneath your lungs that contracts and relaxes to help move air in and out of your lungs |
| cellular waste | substances that your cells no longer need, that may build up to toxic levels if they are not removed (includes carbon diooxide, water, salts, and many other substances) |
| kidneys | two bean-shaped organs at waist level (along your back) that filter waste (urea) from the blood |
| ureters | two tubes that carry liquid waste from the kidneys to the bladder |
| bladder | an elastic muscular organs that holds urine until it leaves the body |
| urethra | the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body |
| urine | waste water that carries cellular wastes from the body |
| filter | to remove unwanted materials from something |
| excretion | the removal of cellular waste |
| liver | an organ that aids in digestion and excretion |
| skin | the largest organ in the body, excretes water and wastes through sweat |
| oxygen | a respiratory gas needed by cells to make energy |
| carbon dioxide | a waste gas from cells that needs to be removed from the body |
