Matter | Anything that takes up space and has mass (weight) |
Property | A characteristic that helps to describe or identify an object, a material or a state of matter. |
Solid | A state of matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space. (A solid keeps its shape when at rest, whether or not it is in a container. |
Liquid | A state of matter that does not have a definite shape or take up a definite amount of space. (A liquid fills the bottom of its container when at rest, and flows freely when poured. |
Gas | A state of matter that does not have a definite shape or take up a definite amount of space. (A gas can expand to fill any available space in a container.) |
Compress | To press on something until it takes up less space. (Gases can be compressed a lot; solids and liquids can be compressed very little.) |
Expand | To become larger, or take up a larger space. (A gas will expand if it is put in a larger container.) |
Volume | The amount of space something occupies. (A property of all matter.) |
Displacement | The volume of water pushed out of the way by an object in the water. |
Density | How heavy something is for its size. |
