Where is Glacier National Park? Montana
Calving When a huge chunk of ice breaks off from the front of a tidewater glacier and leaves a steep cliff.
Moraine Unsorted pile of rock fragments collected by a glacier.
Firn Irregularly shaped ice particles with some air space between them that make up snow.
Sublimation The conversion of solid ice directly to vapor water without passing through the melting phase.
Meltwater or Ablation Zone Where sublimation occurs.
Erosion One of the main activities of glaciers.
Quarrying When a glacier pulls chunks of bedrock up into the ice- especially rock that has been loosened by jointing or fracturing, or by the weight of the glacier itself.
Striations Large debris in the glacier can scratch softer rock underneath as the glacier flows, creating grooves
Drift A general term for all types of glacial sediment.
Till Unsorted deposits (clay, sand, pebbles, and boulders) of glacial sediment.
Glaciation Evidence of the former presence of glaciers.
Surge Acceleration of glacial flow rate, results from reduced friction caused by meltwater at the glacier’s base.
