Dynamic Earth
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| asthenosphere | weak plastic layer of the mantle below the lithosphere |
| lithosphere | rigid outer layer of Earth including the crust and upper mantle |
| Moho | boundary separating the crust from the mantle |
| mantle | layer of Earth below the crust |
| outer core | layer below mantle, liquid, generates magnetic field |
| inner core | solid, innermost layer of the Earth |
| continental crust | makes up contients, THICKER than oceanic, GRANITIC rocks, LESS DENSE |
| oceanic crust | makes up most of the crust, THINNER, BASALTIC rocks, MORE DENSE |
| hot spot | a spot of heat in the mantle producing magma which rises to the surface creating volcanoes |
| p-waves | primary waves, push and pull, travel through anything, faster than s-waves |
| s-waves | secondary waves, shear, travel through SOLIDS ONLY |
| subduction | when oceanic crust slides beneath a trench and back into the mantle of colliding plates |
| epicenter | the location Earth's surface directly above the focus of an earthquake |
| focus | point where an earthquake originates |
