Describe a scientist asks questions, makes observations, experiments, collects/analyzes data, completes research, tries to explain mysteries of life
Theory An explanation that ties together many hypotheses & observations

Steps of the Scientific Method 1.) State the problem, 2.) Gather information, 3.) Form a hypothesis, 4.) Experiment, 5.) Analyze the data, 6.) Form a conclusion, 7.) Repeat the work

Independent Variable (IV) purposely changed factor in the experiment (Scientist Changes This)
Dependent Variable (DV) factor that changes as a result of the purposely changed factor (Experiment Changes This)
Constant any factors that are not allowed to change in the experiment
Control the standard for comparison in the experiment
Repeated Trials carry out the work several times to eliminate errors to get valid results.
What possible errors could be made in an experiment? more than one I.V., measuring errors, too few trials, not enough subjects, small sample size
What is the purpose of the International System of Units? common language that all scientists use to record their data (Metric System)
mass measure of the amount of matter in an object
volume a measurement of the size of a body or region in a 3-dimensional space
Basic unit of length meter
Basic unit of mass kilogram
Basic unit of temperature Kelvin or Celsius
Basic unit of volume liquid: Liter solid: cubic meter
compound light microscope instrument that magnifies small objects so taht they can be seen easily by using 2 or more lenses
How do you calculate the total magnification of an object being viewed using a compound light microscope? Multiply the eyepiece lens times the objective lens
Why is it important to have lab safety rules? Prevent accidents, Avoid Injury, Prevent Damage to equipment
