Galaxies and Beyond

Mr. Smith 6th Grade Science

QuestionAnswer
a large group of stars held together by gravity galaxy
whirlpool like, often has lots of dust in the spirals spiral galaxy
no spirals, little to no dust, basketball or football shaped elliptical galaxy
no recognizable shape, many collisions with other galaxies occur irregular galaxy
Why type of galaxy do we live in? Spiral galaxy
Which way is our galaxy wider? side to side- 100,000 light years
a medium sized barred spiral galaxy Milky Way
bulge at the center Galactic Bulge
Why can't we see the galactic bulge from the Earth? the spiral arm Sagittarius hides it with dust and gas
a band of colors made when light is broken up spectrum
the spectrum shift of a galaxy toward longer (redder) wavelengths because of expansion in space expansion redshift
the beginning moment of the universe when density and temperatures of the universe were very high big bang
electromagnetic waves leftover from the beginning of the universe coming from all directions in space background radiation
extremely bright, extremely distant high-energy source, shining with the light of a trillion stars quasar
scientists believe that at one point there was a huge compact ball of matter that exploded, sending matter in all directions. Gravity caused the matter to join into galaxies and stars the universe formed this way
Dust and gas from the big bang formed a rotating nebulae. A supernova caused the dust and gas to clump and spin. Gravity pulled clumps to the center to form the sun and the other clumps formed planets the solar system formed this way
