DNA Vocabulary Words

Words to study from for test about genetics

DNA Deoxyribonucliec Acid-The chemical code found in the cells that comtains all the information for an organism's growth and development
Mitosis The division of the cell's nucleus
Interphase The point in the cell cycle in which DNA resembles a bunch of loose threads
Prophase The point in mitosis in which chrmosomes start to form and the nuclear envelope starts to weaken
Metaphase When chromosomes line up in the cell's middle
Anaphase When chromatids split and move to opposite sides of the cell
Telephase When the nuclear membrane starts to reform
Animal cytokinesis When the cytoplasm pinches together until it divides
Plant cytokinesis When a cell plate forms between two nuclei and becomes a membrane, and eventually a cell wall
Adenine A nitfogen base. Thymine's pair.
Thymine A nitrogen base. Adenine's pair
Cytosine A nitrogen base. Guanine's pair.
Guanine A nitrogen base. Cytosine's pair.
Enzyme What separates the DNA sides so that new bases can pair with the original sides.
Genes Instructions for making proteins that determine most of your characteristics.
RNA A half ladder containing uracil instead of thymine and sugar ribose instead of deoxyribose
mRNA Messenger RNA. Carries a code from the nucleus to the cytoplasm that determines how amino acids bond
rRNA Ribosomal RNA. Makes ribosomes.
tRNA Transfer RNA. Bring animo acids to the ribosomes nitrogen bases.
Mutations Any permanent change in the DNA sequence of a gene or chromosome.
