differential erosion occurs where a mountain or a plateau is made of both soft, weak rocks, and harder more resistant rocks; the weaker rocks wear away faster, leaving behind knobs and cliffs of more resistant rocks
formation rock layer composed of more than one kind of rock; the kinds and sequences of the rock can be recognized from one place to another
elevation vertical distance measure above sea level
rock column sequence of rocks
plateau large, nearly level area of land that is lifted or elevated above the surrounding area
limestone mostly smooth rocks, with fine-grain texture that contain calcite (and react to hydrochloric acid by fizzing to release carbon dioxide)
sandstone rocks with sandy, rough texture that do NOT react to hydrochloric acid
correlation (correlate) the relationship or connection between rock layers from two or more locations (rocks that are connected or RELATE)
calcite mineral compased of calcium, carbon and oxygen; this is the material in rocks that reacts to acid

layers flat deposits of rock that can be thick or thin and extend over a large area
