| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Heart | Description:the hollow muscular organ located behind the sternum and between the lungs; its rhythmic contractions move the blood through the body; "he stood still, his heart thumping wildly" |
| Artery | a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body |
| Capillaries | capillary - Any of the small blood vessels that connect arteries to veins. |
| Vein | blood vessel that carries blood from the capillaries toward the heart |
| Oxygenated blood | a specialized bodily fluid that delivers necessary substances to the body's cells |
| Deoxygenated blood | Blood that does not contain oxygen |
| Pericardium | a serous membrane with two layers that surrounds the heart |
| Pericardial fluid | fluid from around the heart |
| Epicardium | the innermost of the two layers of the pericardium |
| Myocardium | the middle muscular layer of the heart wall |
| Endocardium | the membrane that lines the cavities of the heart and forms part of the heart valves |
| Atria | any chamber that is connected to other chambers or passageways |
| Ventricle | a chamber of the heart that receives blood from an atrium and pumps it to the arteries |
| Septum | a dividing partition between two tissues or cavities |
| Apex | the lowest superficial part of the heart |
| Superior vena cavity | a large diameter, yet short, vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the upper half of the body |
| Aorta | the large trunk artery that carries blood from the left ventricle of the heart to branch arteries |
| Inferior vena cavity | the large vein that carries de-oxygenated blood from the lower half of the body |
| Pulmonary artery | one of two arteries (branches of the pulmonary trunk) that carry venous blood from the heart to the lungs |
| Pulmonary vein | any of four veins that carry arterial blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart |
| contraction | act of contracting or the state of being contracted |
| relaxation | The lengthening of inactive muscle or muscle fibers |
| electrical impulses | The electrochemical transmission of a signal along a nerve fiber that produces an excitatory or inhibitory response at a target tissue, |
| lubb/dubb | The sound the heart makes when it beats |
| blood pressure | The pressure exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels, especially the arteries |
| systolic | The rhythmic contraction of the heart, especially of the ventricles, by which blood is driven through the aorta and pulmonary artery after each dilation or diastole. |
| diastolic | The normal rhythmically occurring relaxation and dilatation of the heart chambers, especially the ventricles, during which they fill with blood |
| normal blood pressure | Less than 120 / Less than 80 |
