Circulatory Level 1

All the vocabulary for Level 1 of the Circulatory system menu.

QuestionAnswer
heart An organ made of cardiac muscle that acts as a pump to move blood around your body.
blood The fluid that is pumped through the circulatory system, made of plasma, platelets, red blood cells and white blood cells.
blood vessel The tubes that carry blood throughout the body.
vein Type of blood vessel that carries blood TOWARD the heart (or INTO the heart).
artery Type of blood vessel that carries blood AWAY FROM the heart (or OUT OF the heart).
cardiovascular Another name for the circulatory system (1st part means heart and 2nd part means 'fluids and vessels').
capillary Microscopic blood vessels that are only one cell thick, that connect all blood vessels and veins. Nutrients and oxygen move into and out of the blood by passing through the thin walls of these vessels.
white blood cell Cells in blood that fight bacteria, viruses and other invaders by destroying and 'eating' them.
red blood cell Cells in blood that carry oxygen, with the help of hemoglobin.
plasma The liquid part of blood (mostly made up of water) that carries nutrients.
platelets Irregularly shaped blood cells that help blood to clot where there is a cut or injury. They stick together and dry up to form a scab.
ventricle The name of the 2 bottom chambers of the heart.
atrium The name of the 2 top chambers of the heart.
oxygen A gas needed by our bodies for respiration, that is carried by red blood cells.
cardiac muscle The type of muscle that makes up the heart.
bone marrow The jelly-like substance in the middle of bones, where blood cells are made.
waste Substances that your body no longer needs, and wants to get rid of.
nutrients Necessary substances that are carried by the blood to all cells, in order for organisms to grow and survive.
