Describe elastic rebound the sudden return of elastically deformed rock to its undeformed shape
What is the focus of an earthquake? the location where the first motion of an earthquake occurs
What is the epicenter of an earthquake? the point on Earth's surface directly above the earthquake's focus
Describe P waves of an earthquake. the fastest seismic wave, can travel through solids, liquids, and gases
Describe S waves of an earthquake. the second-fastest seismic wave, that can only travel through solids
How does the structure of Earth's interior effect seismic waves? it can effect the speed and direction of seismic waves
Why do earthquakes usually occur at plate boundaries? rock in environments near plate tectonic boundaries experience great stress
Define a seismograph. an instrument that records ground vibrations
What is the Richter scale? a magnitude scale that measures ground motion
What can happen to a building during an earthquake? it may sway or collapse
What should you do if you are indoors during an earthquake? crouch under a desk
