Ch23.3 Erosion
Stream and Ground Water Erosion & Deposition
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Deposition | Process in which sediment is laid down in new locations |
| Flood Plain | flat area along a stream that is entirely covered only during times of flood. Sediments are deposited here. |
| Meandering stream | River with a winding, loop-like path |
| Oxbow Lake | Curved lake that forms when a meandering stream cuts a new path. |
| Waterfall | Forms when water moves over rocks with different resistance to weathering. The softer rock gets eroded faster -- producing a cliff. |
| V-shaped Valley | Steep sided valley cut through mountains by fast moving streams |
| Alluvial Fan | mass of sediment that is deposited by a river at the base of a mountain. |
| Delta | Mass of sediment deposited by a river as it enters a body of water (ocean, lake). |
| Caves & Sinkholes | Hollows or caverns formed by chemical weathering of limestone by acidic ground water. |
