Ch. 23.2 Erosion
Weathering and Erosion
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Weathering | chemical or mechanical process by which rocks are broken down into fragments. |
| Mechanical Weathering | Physical process of breaking rock into smaller pieces. Cold or Alternating cold-warm environments promote this type of weathering |
| Chemical Weathering | a process in which rock is broken down by chemical reactions that dissolve minerals making up the rock. Common in warm and tropical environments |
| Frost Wedging (Ice Wedging) | Process by which water freezes, expands, and breaks rock apart. Forms pot holes and rock spires. |
| Abrasion | Process by which rocks scrape and grind against one another. |
| Erosion | Process that wears away rock and soil (Breaks it down and carries it away). Done by water, wind, and gravity. |
| Mass Movement | Downward movement of rock and soil down a slope due to gravity. Ex: landslide, mudflow, creep, or slump |
