Adaptation vocabulary words

TermDefinition
Adaptation A change in an organism that helps it to survive.
Amphibian An ectothermic animal that lives on land and in the water.
Appendage A body extension that comes out of the main part of the body.
Forces Things that push or pull.
Gills An organ that allows water animals to exchange oxygen and corbon dioxide in the water.
Organism A form of life such as plants,animals,fungus, and bacteria.
Turgor Pressure The water inside a plant cell that pushes the cell wall out.
Xylem Plant tissue that moves water and nutrients up from the roots.
Ectothermic An animal's body temperature is regulated by the environment.(cold-blooded)
Endothermic An animal's body temperature that is regulated by the animal.(warm-blooded)
Emergence The appearance of a new trait in a species. to come out.
Geotropism The response of a plant's growth due to gravity. the stem grows up and the roots grow down.
Wilt To become limp and drooping due to a lack of water. (lack of turgor pressure)
Phototropism When a plant grows toward the light.
Gravitropism The response of a plant's growth due to gravity. The stem grows up and the roots grow down.
External Stimuli Something that happens outside of the body and creates a response.
Internal Stimuli Something that happens inside the body and creates a response.
Demonstrate To provide an example of how to do something.
Function The job or purpose of something.
Investigate To look into and figure out what happened.
Structure How something is made or put together.
