What did James Hutton explain? He explained the variety of rocks
What is the meaning of 'deep time'? 'Deep time' is the millions of years over which the Earth has changed
How can you date rocks? By looking at the different layers of rock. Looking for fossils. Cross cutting features - if one type of rock cuts across another rock type, for example: hot magma can fill cracks and solidify as rock
What did Alfred Wegener think? He came up with a theory called continental drift (the movement of continents from one another)
What proof did Alfred Wegener have to support his theory of continental drift? He noticed that continents fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. He also saw matches of mountain chains, rocks and fossils on different continents
