active solar energy systems Direct use of solar energy that require mechanical power; usually consists of pumps and other machinery to circulate air water, or other fluids from solar collector to a heat sink where the heat may be stored.
alternative energy Renewable and nonrenewable energy resources that are alternatives to the fossil fuels.
biofuel Energy recovered from biomass - organic matter such as plant material and animal waste. The energy from biomass comes from chemical bonds formed through photosynthesis in living or once-living matter.
fuel cell A device that produces electricity directly from a chemical reaction in a specially designed cell.
geothermal energy The useful conversion or natural heat from the interior of Earth
nonrenewable energy Energy sources, Including nuclear and geothermal that are dependent on fuels or a resource that may be used up much faster than it is replenished by natural processes.
passive solar energy systems Direct use of solar energy through architectural design to enhance or take advantage of natural changes in solar energy that occur throughout the year without requiring mechanical power
photovoltaics Technology that converts sunlight directly into electricity using a solid semiconductor material
renewable energy Alternative energy sources, such as solar, water, wind, and biomass that are more or less continuously made available in a time framework useful to people
solar collector Device for collecting and storing solar energy.
solar energy system Collecting and using energy from the sun directly.
tidal power Form of water utilizing ocean tides in places where favorable topography allows for construction of a power plant.
water power Alternative energy source derived from flowing water.One of the world's oldest & most common energy sources. Sources vary in size from microhydropower systems to large reservoirs and dams.
wind power Alternative energy source that has been used by people for centuries.More recently, thousands of windmills have been installed to produce electric energy
