Our Immune System

Vocabulary for the Immune System Unit

QuestionAnswer
pathogen a foreign organism that causes a response in the immune system. Pathogens can be bacteria, viruses, etc.
first line of defense skin, tears, mucus, stomach acid; inflammation
B cell a specific kind of white blood cell that produces antibodies
second line of defense phagocytes respond to pathogens
T cell a specific kind of white blood cell that tag pathogens with special markers, identifying them as foreign
phagocyte a white blood cell that ingests (eats) and destroys bacteria, foreign particles and other cells in the bloodstream
vaccine A preparation made from killed or weakened pathogens which when introduced in the body induce the production of antibodies and thus boost the body's immunity against that pathogen
antibodies Protein molecules produced by B cells in response to a specific pathogen.
spleen an organ on the left side of the abdomen that produces some white blood cells, filters the blood, stores blood cells, and destroys old blood cells. It's part of the body's lymph system.
pus A whitish-yellow or yellow substance made mainly of dead white blood cells and dead bacteria; normally found in regions of bacterial infection
lymph nodes small glands located throughout the body that help fight infection and disease. They filter a fluid called lymph and contain white blood cells.
thymus a lymph system organ located in the chest behind the breastbone where white blood cells grow and multiply
tonsils lymph glands at the back of the nose and throat that fight infections in the throat and respiratory system (lungs and airways)
white blood cells cells made by bone marrow and help the body fight infection and other diseases
macrophage giant phagocyte, large white blood cell
third line of defense involves the B cells and T cells
