Chapter 6 Study Questions

QuestionAnswer
What is the full name for DNA? deoxyribonucleic acid
How many pairs of chromosomes do we have? 23
Who discovered the rules of nucleotide base pairing? Chargaff
Who discovered that DNA was shaped like a spiral? Franklin
Who was the first to develop the double helix model for DNA? Watson and Crick
What are the parts of a nucleotide? sugar, base, and a phosphate
What are the 4 bases of DNA? thymine, guanine, cytosine, and adenine
What does adenine bond with? thymine
If 30% of the DNA was thymine, how much would be adenine? 30 %
If 10% of the DNA was guanine, who much would be thymine? 40%
How does the double helix help DNA perform its functions? It allows it to coil into a small space and allows for it to split apart for replication.
Where are genes found? On a chromosome
What is the function of t-RNA? It brings the amino acid to the ribosome for protein production.
What is the process called when mRNA is produced by copying the code of DNA? transcription
Where are proteins made? In the cytoplasm by the ribosome.
Why does DNA make a copy of a sequence onto RNA for protein production? DNA is too large to leave the nucleus.
How does 2 meters of DNA fit into the nucleus of a cell? It is coiled tightly around proteins.
Which is smaller a gene or a chromosome? A gene
What is a gene? A gene is a portion of the strand of DNA that codes for a specific protein.
What is the name given to a sequence of 3 bases? A codon.
How many amino acids could be made from a sequence of 15 bases? 5 because it takes a sequence of 3 bases to code for an amino acid.
What is made in the ribosome? proteins
How are genes related to the traits that we have? Genes code for specific proteins to be made. These proteins then carry out the functions of our body and make up the traits that we possess.
What is the name given to a specific strand of DNA that codes for a specific protein? a gene
DNA has deoxyribose as its sugar, RNA has: ribose
DNA uses thymine as a base; RNA uses uracil
What can a mutation produce? the wrong protein
An example of a substitution mutation is: Sickle Cell Anemia
What is it called when a scientist changes an organism's genes? genetic engineering
Agent orange caused damage to people's DNA; agent orange is a __________________? mutagen
What is it called when the wrong base is added? substitution
What is it called when a base is left out? Deletion
What is it called if a base is added? insertion
What are the subunits that make up DNA called? nucleotides
What are chromosomes made of? protein and DNA
