Exam (midterm)

Side ASide B
study of living things + their environment ecology
study of fungus mycology
study of plants bontony
occurs when a species makes more of itself reproduction
the passing of traits from parent to offspring is called... inheritance
_____ occurs when an org. changes or becomes more complex during its lifetime development
the study of animals zoology
scientists use the _____ system of measurement metric system (SI)
the question you're attempting to answer in an experiment problem
applied science used to better the human condition (often called ____.) technology
hypothesis-- an educated guess to your problem
homeostasis-- the avility of an org. to maintain the same state /condition internally
stimuli-- any change in an org.'s environment
inheritance-- the passing on of traits from parent to offspring
adaptation-- when a species/org. becomes better adapted to its environment over time + it becomes more successful
What are the 3 major types of science? Earth(studies earth + space), Physical(studies matter + energy or chemistry + physics), + Life(studies living organisms; biology)
3 principles of science: Natural causality(physical events have a phys. cause), Law of Uniformity(phys. processes are same now as were in teh past), + Law of Common Perception(humans perceive stimuli the same)
3 reasons we study biology... 1)b/c it's cool; 2)because we are made to; 3)b/c we are alive
List the steps of the scientific method. Observe, define a problem, hypothesis, test, collect data, conclusion, report + share
3 reasons why msrmts. are used in science... makes experiment more accurate, lowers amt. of bias in experiment, improves communication
List in order the steps of biological organization. cells(bacteria) --> tissues(jellyfish) --> organs(roundworm) --> organ system(ppl., organisms)
4 necessary parts of a good or "controlled" experiment have a control, control your variables, msrmt.(tools), repeats of your exprmt.
theory-- explanation continually supported by observation + experimentation
law-- a promoted theory (that hasn't been proven wrong)
List 4 of the 8 recurring themes found in biology. Circle of Life(idea that all life is connected), Structure & Function(how it's built is directly related to what it does), Untiy + Diversity(most of life is very similar, but the minor diff, account for the diff. species), Organization of Life
the space inside of the cell cytoplasm
The __ are filled with pigments in plant cells + are used to attract animals chromoplasts
_____ wrote the Cell Theory Virchow
Chromatin is made up of ____ and _____. protein and DNA
_____ actually make the proteins ribosomes
The ___ is found in plant cells and is used to store starch. leucoplast
____ is the protein-rich fluid in the cell space cytosol
In plants, the ____ is used to make glucose chloroplast
nuclear envelope/membrane s= dbl membrane with a tight inner and loose outer membrane (w/ pores where they fuse) f= for protection
nucleolus s=condensed areas of chromatin f=make robosomes
RER s=highly folded membrane embedded with ribosomes f=to build proteins
SER s=highly folded membrane f=package (vesicle) and temporarily store protein
Golgi Apparatus s=highly folded membrane embedded with enzymes f=open vesicle, add finishing touches to protein, re-package protein and send it where it is needed
vesicle s=membrane bound sac f=transports (exports) protein inside cell
vacuole s=membrane bound sac f=for storage
cytoskeleton s= microtubules made of protein f= for support (from/by protein), transport protein (within cell)
mitochondria s=kidney-bean-shaped outer membrane with a highly folded inner membrane embedded with enzymes f=convert glucose (cell food) to ATP (Adenosine triphosphate/cell energy)
lysosome s=membrane bound sac filled with enzymes f=recycle old, damaged, worn out cell parts
List 3 structural diff. b/t plant and animal cells. 1.Plant cells have a cell wall and cell membrane 2.Plant cells have a larger vacuole to store more H2O b/c they make their own food 3. Plants have plastids (chloroplasts, leucoplasts, chromoplasts)
State the Cell Theory 1. Cells can only come from cells 2.Every living thing comes from cells. 3.Cells are the base unit of life.
Explain why learning about the cell is so important in the study of biology. 1. Cells are the base unit of our lives and to every living thing. 2. Cells create everything in our world and make it possible for us to live.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
