Earths History

QuestionAnswer
what are fossils? marks or items left in rock layers by living things.
mold fossil a hollow impression of a living thing in a rock after it died.Goes with cast fossil.
cast fossil solid mineral deposit that filled a mold, leaving a copy of the living thing. Goes with mold fossil.
trace fossil an impression made in rock made by a living thing during it's life activities. Ex. poop/dung or footprints.
petrified fossil plant or animal tissue replaced by minerals.Ex. tree trunk picture w/ rock inside.
whole animal fossil an entire animal or plant encased and preserved in ice, sap, or tar. Ex. bug in sap movie.
carbon film fossil the image of the organism or part preserved in rock layers. Ex. leaf print on ground.
how do scientists find the age of really old stuff? by using one of the three techniques.
3 techniques radioactive/radiometric dating, relative dating, and carbon dating.
which are most techniques are most accurate? carbon dating and radioactive/radiometric dating
radioactive/radiometric dating a way to find the age of rocks by measuring the decay or breaking down of radioactive elements in them. Done with uranium and things that were never alive.
relative dating scientists will often find the age of a rock or fossil by comparing it to the layer of earth it was from and to other fossils near it.Done on both living and dead things.NOT AS ACCURATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
carbon dating a way to find the age of rocks by measuring the decay or breaking down of elements in the rock. Done with carbon and on things that were once living and organic material. Almost the same as radiometric dating.
what do paleontologists study? Why? scientists who study prehistoric life based on fossil evidence. They study to learn more about the earth.
what do geologists study?why? scientists who study rocks and minerals. They study because they want to know about Earths history
geological era a huge period of time in earths history. Each era has a different fossil, the land and climate change, and at the end of an era many life forms become extinct.
geological era order PPMC-Precambrian,Paleozoic,Mesozoic,Cenozoic.
Precambrian lasted about 4 billion years, started about 4.6 billion years ago and when the earth formed, crazy long compared to the other eras,

Cenozoic today,Started about 65 million years ago, how earth is today, Age of mammals and birds, humans appeared, had ice age-last ended about 12,000 years ago, found evidence of pre-humans but not as tall as us,brains were smaller, didn't walk as straightHOMOSAPIEN
Homo Sapiens the species of fossils we are, the earliest fossil evidence was 100,000 years ago, lived in Africa, by 40,000 years ago looked much like us,they had spread as far as Europe+Southeast Asia by that time.
