Definitions on Muscular System

| Abduction- | Moving a body part closer to the midline |
| Adduction- | Moving a body part away from the midline |
| Flexion- | Decreasing the angle between two bones or bending a body part |
| Extension- | Increasing the angle between two bones or straightning a body part |
| Rotation- | Turning a body part on its own axis (head turning) |
| Circumduction- | Movin in a circle at a joint or moving one en of a body part as the other end stays stationary |
| Muscle system- | Made up of over 600 muscles |
| Excitability- | Irritability, the ability to respond to stimulus such as nerve impulse |
| Contractibility- | Muscle fibers contract, which cause movement |
| Extensibility- | The ability to be stretched |
| Elasticity- | Allows the muscle to return back to its normal shape after it has been contracted or stretched |
| Cardic muscle- | Forms the walls of the heart and contracts to make blood flow. Involuntary |
| Visceral/smooth muscle- | Found in the inner organs such as the digestive system and reproductive system, and in blood vessels and in the eyes. They contract to cause movement in these organs. Involuntary |
| Contracture- | Severe tightning of a flexor muscle resulting in the bending of a joint |
| Insertion- | The en of a muscle attached to a bone that moves when it contracts |
| Origin- | The end of a muscle attached to a bone that doesnt move |
| Skeletal muscle- | Muscle attached to the bone that makes the body move |
| Muscle Tone- | State of partial contraction |
| Tendon- | Strong, tough, connective tissue cords |
| Fascia- | Sheet-like membrane that covers the tissue |
