EX. W Exam 3

Extreme Weather

QuestionAnswer
warm sector the region of warm air between between the warm and cold fronts. Partly Cloudy.
cyclogenesis any development or strengthening of a mid-latitude cyclone
convergence causes air density to increase directly above the surface
For a surface low to develop into a storm... upper level divergence of air must be greater than surface convergence of air
For a surface high to strengthen into a storm upper level convergence of air must exceed low-level divergence of air
anticyclone an area of high atmospheric pressure around which the wind blows clockwise (N.H.)
Cyclone an area of low pressure around which the winds blow counter-clockwise (N.H.)
850 mb level contains much of the moisture in the atmosphere. basically where the clouds are. ( look for dew point)
700 mb level vertical velocity. this is the layer to which we can see vertical motion
500 mb Steering winds and vorticity. half way up. the average wind speed of the atmosphere
300 mb Jet stream. It controls much of the lower atmosphere
Ordinary cell (air mass) thunderstorms tend to form in a region where there is limited wind sheer ( where wind speed and wind direction do not abruptly change with increasing height above the surface)
