What charge does a neutron have? neutral
What charge does an electron have? negative
Element made up of only one kind of atom...can't be broken down into a simpler form
How do atoms combine? by sharing their outer electrons
Ion an atom with either a positive or negative charge
Ions are attracted to... other ions with an opposite charge

mixture a combination of substances in swhich individual substances retain their own properties
solution a mixture in which one o rmore substances mix evenly with other substances
suspension a mixture in which substances are evenly spread through a liquid or gas
organic compounds make up foods and cell membranes
passive transport the movement of particles across the cell membrane by diffusion...uses NO energy
active transport when materials require energy to move through a cell membrane...transport proteins are used in active transport
endocytosis a process by which cells transport a large body, such as a large protein molecule, through a cell membrane into the cytoplasm
metabolism the total of all chemical activities of an organism that enable it to stay alive, grow, and reproduce
producer organism that makes its own food. Plants are examples
consumer organism that can't make their own food
photosynthesis when producers change light energy into chemical energy
respiration when food molecules are broken down to release stored energy. Carbon dioxide an water are given off as waste products
fermentation a form of respiration that converts energy from glucose when oxygen is insufficient.
biomass organic material from plants or animals that is used from energy

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
