Weathering.

QuestionAnswer
abrasion a form of physical weathering caused by friction between rock particles
acid rain precipitation with a pH below 7 that is an agent of chemical weathering
chemical weathering when rock is broken down into a new substance
frost action weathering caused by the freezing and thawing of water
condensation the process that occurs when a gas loses energy to form a liquid
evaporation the process that occurs when a liquid gains energy to form a gas
groundwater water that infiltrates (seeps into) the ground
infiltration water seeping into the ground
permeability the ability of a soil to soak up water
organic layer the top layer of soil that contains dead plants or animals
mechanical (physical) weathering the breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces without changing the composition of the rock
porosity the amount of empty space in a soil
precipitation water in the form of rain, snow, or sleet falling from the sky
runoff precipitation that moves over land and does NOT infiltrate the soil
water cycle the circulation of water between the oceans, atmosphere, and land
water table the place that marks the top of the zone of saturation
