Weathering.

| mechanical (physical) weathering | the breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces without changing the composition of the rock |
| porosity | the amount of empty space in a soil |
| precipitation | water in the form of rain, snow, or sleet falling from the sky |
| runoff | precipitation that moves over land and does NOT infiltrate the soil |
| water cycle | the circulation of water between the oceans, atmosphere, and land |
| water table | the place that marks the top of the zone of saturation |
